WebMarshal Quota Management

WebMarshal allows you to manage users' browsing activity with bandwidth and browsing time quotas.

The Issue

High speed Web access is a standard business tool, but it can also be a temptation. Video and audio downloads consume network bandwidth. Auctions and other real-time sites are a distraction.

Most organizations allow some personal use of the Web. Simply blocking all access could cause resentment.

The first part of the solution is to create a policy setting appropriate limits. Once a policy is in place, the next requirement is a way of monitoring and controlling usage.

How can WebMarshal Help?

WebMarshal allows you to set limits to Web access by total bandwidth or total active browsing time. Quotas can be applied on a daily or weekly basis. Quotas can vary for specific user groups, file types, URLs, and times of day. You can apply quotas that allow users to automatically extend their quota (with reporting visibility). You can even apply flexible policies that prevent personal use during work time but allow personal use during lunchtime and out-of-hours.

For instance, you might choose to:

  • Set a limit of 1 hour a week per user for browsing to news sites, except for the executive team.
  • Set a limit of 10 MB a day per user for image files, except for the marketing department.
  • Set a limit of 15 MB per user for all browsing during business hours, but allow unlimited bandwidth usage after hours.

The quota function is a standard part of WebMarshal's access policy.
