Ontrack® PowerControls™ is a simple, yet powerful software tool for copying, searching, recovering and analyzing email and other mailbox items directly from Microsoft® Exchange server backups, un-mounted databases (EDB) and Information Store files - and now, even from your live Exchange server!

 

Ontrack® PowerControls™ is designed to perform fast and efficient email search and Exchange server recovery directly from Microsoft® Exchange Server backups, un-mounted database files (EDB) and Information Store files.

 

By working directly with your existing Exchange server backup architecture and procedures, Ontrack PowerControls eliminates time consuming and expensive single mailbox (“brick-level”) backups.

Ontrack® PowerControls™ provides a comprehensive list of features to accelerate, facilitate and automate Microsoft® Exchange server recovery and email search.

 

Opening Source Files:

Open a source Exchange Database (EDB) and specify a target PST file or target Exchange Server. With the additional Agent for PST, you can have a PST as the source file.

Extract Wizard:

Read both private and public Exchange Information Store data from tape and disk backups to any alternate location (e.g., machine, volume folder). Extract Wizard reads EDB, STM and LOG files from tapes and restores them to any alternate location, thereby eliminating the need for a Recovery Server.

Finding Messages:

Search a source EDB, PST or CAS file for message items that are defined by such criteria as keywords, message senders and recipients and message creations dates.

Exporting Messages:

Export mail from an EDB, PST or CAS source file to a local or network destination. Save exported messages as Microsoft Outlook files (.MSG) or plain text files (.TXT).

Restoring Exchange Data:

Restore data from a source EDB, PST or CAS file to a target destination simply using by using drag and drop or the Copy and Paste/Paste Special commands.

Command Line:

Batch repetitive processes such as multiple copy and export tasks without initiating the interface. This feature is very beneficial in Ontrack PowerControls production environment implementations.

 

Reporting:

Get statistics about the data store such as size and counts for attachments and messages.

Content Analysis Store:

Automate and save search results by selecting sources. Sources include entire EDB files, individual mailboxes from an EDB, or folders from an EDB. Any numbers of sources are allowed including multiple EDBs.

Message Views:

View all instances of a given message or attachment in the EDB source within the same database as well as messages related by conversation.

Customize Agents:

The key to PowerControls is its ability to directly read .edb files. Using it requires no change to backup procedures - rather, it works after a backup has been completed. The schematic below shows you how PowerControls works.

Step 1: As normal, backup software backs up an Exchange database and creates Exchange backup sets.

 

Step 2: The PowerControls ExtractWizard restores the database to an alternate location that is not an Exchange server, as shown in Step 2.

Note: For those backup formats currently not supported by ExtractWizard, the Exchange backup software restores the database to an alternate location that is not an Exchange server.

 

Lastly...

 

Step 3: PowerControls can now be used to view and search through individual mailboxes, messages and attachments, as shown in Step 3.

 

Step 4: PowerControls can restore a single mailbox, messages or attachments back to the production Exchange server, or to a new or existing .PST file at another location.

 

In order to effectively use this software, the following system requirements apply:

• Windows 2000 Server
• Windows 2000 Professional
• Windows XP Professional
• Windows 2003 Server
• Windows Vista Business
• Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit versions)
• Windows Vista Enterprise

Note: Ontrack PowerControls in Vista can only be run by users with administrative privileges and in administrative mode.

• Microsoft Outlook 2000 or later. Machine must have Outlook 2000 or greater installed and Outlook must have been run at least once to configure Outlook’s settings. Additionally, those versions of Outlook that make a distinction between “Internet Email” and “Corporate Email” need to be configured for the latter.
• For Exchange Server 5.5: Microsoft Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2003 is required.

Note: Microsoft Outlook 2007 cannot connect to an Exchange Server 5.5. However, Microsoft Outlook 2007 can be used with Ontrack PowerControls to access an .edb file originating from an Exchange 5.5 environment.

• For Exchange Server 2000 and Exchange Server 2003: Microsoft Outlook 2000 or later is required.
• For Exchange Server 2007: Microsoft Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 is required.

 

Note: The Operating Systems listed above and Microsoft Outlook are required to have the latest service packs installed.

 

• Microsoft .NET 2.0 framework
• Intel ® Pentium® compatible processor
• 1024 MB RAM minimum
• 200 MB of free hard disk space for the installation. More disk space will be needed for processing log files when opening an EDB file.
• Monitor with 800 x 600 or higher screen resolution
• USB port (for Ontrack PowerControls product licenses requiring HASP key dongle to run application)

Ontrack PowerControls contains EasyUpdate™ which allows you to automatically update Ontrack PowerControls via the Internet. We recommend running EasyUpdate as soon as you install Ontrack PowerControls in case there is an update that was not included with your version.
