Norman Virus Control for Exchange 2000

Introduction

Most companies are connected to the Internet, and email is a common communication method. However, email has also been the most common way for spreading malicious programs (viruses, worms etc.).

The need for scanning for malware on the email server is therefore crucial. NVC for Exchange 2000 is a virus scanner that integrates with Microsoft Exchange 2000 to ensure that everything that passes through the Exchange 2000 server is checked for viruses, trojans, and other malicious code.

Norman's solution for protection

NVC for Exchange 2000 uses an VSAPI 2.0 plug-in which connects to the Exchange Information Store on the server for access to emails and attachments. NVC for Exchange 2000 becomes an integrated part of Exchange itself.

The components of NVC for Exchange 2000

On-access scanning

All incoming and outgoing emails are scanned on access in both private and public information stores. Access is only granted to virus-free items or when a present virus has been removed. Each element of the email is scanned separately on-access. I.e. the attachment and the mail body is scanned individually. Access to an email is only granted if all elements are virus free.

If scanning of an attachment fails, access to the item is denied until it is successfully scanned to ensure that a program error does not lead to leakage.

Configuration

Configuration is done within the Norman Configuration Editor. NVC for Exchange 2000 will add a component in Norman Configuration Editor. Thus all Norman Virus Control operation on the server can be handled through one interface.

Norman Service Monitor

When NVC for Exchange 2000 is installed on an Exchange system, Norman Service Monitor will be configured to monitor the Information Store component of Exchange. This ensures better control over Exchange on the server and notifies the administrator if something is wrong.

Updating virus definition files and scanner engine

When updated virus definition files and scanner engine are published for download from Norman you may use Norman Internet Update (NIU) to ensure that you have the newest possible protection.

NVC for Exchange 2000 updates itself dynamically and without any user interaction. You may configure NIU to check for updates e.g. each day, once a week or any interval you choose. Thus NVC for Exchange 2000 is automatically kept up-to-date.

System requirements

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 with Service Pack 1
