MaX Compression Frequently Asked Questions

Which mail clients does MaX Compression support?

  • Outlook 98, 2000, 2002 (XP), 2003 and 2007

  • Outlook Web Access

Which mail clients can receive compressed files?

Attachments will only be automatically decompressed on systems that have the Max Compression Client (Outlook or OWA) software installed.

A separate 'Reader' only utility is included as part of the MaX Compression Enterprise package.

If Max Compression is not installed, any desktop compression utility can be used to open the file.

Are the ZIP files produced by MaX Compression compatible with other ZIP programs?

Yes, MaX Compression is compatible with all major manual zipping and unzipping utilities (such as WinZip). However these are not needed to enable MaX Compression to function.

When does decompression take place?

Depending on the setting of the "Automatically decompress incoming mail" option, decompression takes place either when the message is received or when the attachment is opened by double-clicking. As decompression is so fast, it is best to decompress when you open the attachment; this provides greater disk savings as well.

What does Smart Mode do?

Smart Mode allows the administrator to configure central rules to determine which compression mode to use. This means that all users will be using compression in the most efficient manner for that system and this will be controlled centrally by the administrator.

Can I prevent e-mails to my FAX service being compressed?

Yes. As mentioned above, Smart Mode allows the administrator to control whether a message is compressed or not by multiple criteria.

I've heard I can use MaX Compression with Outlook and a POP3 Server, is this correct?

Yes. MaX Compression can be configured to work with Outlook clients working with POP3 servers.

I connect to different Exchange Servers and POP3 Servers from my workstation. Is this a problem?

MaX Compression can support this, though you will need a license key for each server.

Can I include the MaX Compression Client with the automated install system I use?

Yes. With well over 2 million deployments, MaX Compression has been rolled-out using many different deployment tools. Information is available from C2C if your tool is not included in the help file. View the Deployment guide here.

How can I evaluate MaX Compression?

Simply download an evaluation copy. This is a full product and will work for 30 days. At the end of 30 days it will simply stop working. There is an uninstall program to remove the files. If you like it, then all you need is a license string to change it from evaluation to permanent copy. You will not need to re-install.

Is there a server component for compression?

MaX Compression Server compresses all resident emails within the Information Stores.

My users use OWA sometimes. Will they be able to seamlessly open compressed items when using OWA?

MaX Compression Client is an Outlook add-in; you will need to use Max Compression for OWA in order to achieve auto-compression and decompression for Outlook Web Access. MaX Compression OWA is a component of MaX Compression Enterprise.

Can I make a configuration change, such as the Smart Mode rules, for all users?

Yes. As long as they are all connected to the Exchange server over a LAN, you need only change one configuration file to affect all users.

Can I make a configuration change for dial-up users?

Yes, you can generate a version of the configuration, which can be mailed to users at home - they double-click on a file to reconfigure their PCs.

Will my server-based virus scanner be able to scan compressed file attachments?

It will, only if the scanner supports scanning into standard ZIP-format files. If files are compressed to an EXE, then the scanner must support scanning into self-extracting EXE files.

Some of my users require encryption. Is this a problem?

MaX Compression Enterprise does support all major encryption solutions.
