What's The Problem?
Every email message is different, and
every organization has different requirements for email usage. Even
within an organization, requirements can differ between users, and
new types of content can be required daily.
The dynamic nature of email poses unique challenges for the
enforcement of email content security policy. Policy can describe
what content is inappropriate, but not where that inappropriate
content will come from.
How Can MailMarshal Help?
MailMarshal deploys a number of
technologies to analyze email content and apply your policy.
- The MailMarshal Receiver tests email as it
arrives from outside servers. The Receiver can reject incoming
email that is malformed, or that originates from banned
locations. The Receiver can also rejected email based on ESMTP
criteria such as message size and sender.
- The MailMarshal Engine scans messages that
have been received.
- Each message is "exploded" into its component MIME
parts.
- Compressed attachments are recursively exploded.
- The message is passed to Marshal's SpamCensor for analysis.
SpamCensor uses a multi-dimensional approach to determine the
probability that a message is Spam.
- Each part of the message is checked against the site's
policy. The policy can be based on the sender, recipient,
text content, file type, file name/extension, and many other
variables.
- Each message can be checked against one or many "text
censor" scripts to identify undesirable content such as
inappropriate language or other words or terms that violate the
enterprise policies.
- Each part of the message can be passed to an Anti-Virus
scanner and an Anti-Spyware Scanner.
- Images can be scanned by Image Analyzer to determine the
presence of inappropriate content.
- Based on the results of the content analysis, MailMarshal
can quarantine or redirect a message, or deliver it as
addressed. Advanced features exist to provide for header
re-writing, message tagging, message rejection with specific
notifications or message deletion.
- For outbound messages, MailMarshal content analysis can also
be used to control what information is allowed to leave the
enterprise thus helping to ensure compliance with numerous laws
and regulation such as HIPAA as well as ensuring company
classified or private information is not released via email.
- Content analysis rules can be applied globally, by group, by
domain or by individual users. This allows for a very
powerful method of ensuring that only desired content may be
received or sent without limiting the ability of authorized
users to deliver their mail as well.
MailMarshal allows you to monitor and control the flow of
information through your email servers. It provides an important
tool to enforce your Acceptable Use Policy for email.
