Category OverviewSpam continues to be the most significant challenge facing email administrators today. Enterprise administrators consistently report levels of spam that well exceed half of the incoming email and in some cases approaching nearly 90% of all incoming email. Legal actions have proven difficult if not impossible to enforce and little progress has been made in reducing the amount of spam in the Internet today. While there does not seem to be any effective legal or other solution forthcoming, it is possible to manage the level of spam activity by implementing effective software and hardware filters that will identify and block spam before it enters the enterprise.
The most effective products are those that use a variety of techniques to identify and block spam; most enterprise class products today use a combination of reputation services such as various Real Time Black lists and country specific IP address blocking. A variety of other techniques are employed, the most effective of which employ zero-day protection frameworks.
In addition to spam blocking, there is an increase in demand for content filtering to help achieve a number of compliance requirements both inbound and outbound. Lastly, email continues to be a primary vehicle for transporting other types of network malware threats such as viruses and spyware.
The most effective products will include a spam component, a content filtering component to help achieve compliance and a security component to identify and neutralize threats such as viruses, malware, spyware and other email borne threats.
